HOW DID GOOLWA BECOME A CITTASLOW?To become a Cittaslow, Goolwa completed a self-assessment against a series of goals using the following categories: * Environment (air, water or land pollution, waste management and recycling) |
|
A Goolwa Cittaslow Working Party, made up of people from the Goolwa community and businesses plus some councillors and advisors completed the self-assessment phase, and on 4 September, 2006 submitted a formal application to the Cittaslow headquarters in Italy for recognition. Click here for details of the formal handover ceremony. We satisfied the minimum score of 50% for the goals to reach the first stage of acceptance. Members of the International Cittaslow committee visited Goolwa in March 2007. Their visit coincided with the South Australian Wooden Boat and Music Festival held in Goolwa. The delegation declared Goolwa as the first non-European town to be accepted as a member of the international network of towns where quality of life is important. ![]() Mr Robert Berton, President, Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Adelaide, Mr Teodoro Spiniello, Secretary General, Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Adelaide, Lyn Clark, Convenor, Goolwa Cittaslow Working Party, Mr Kym McHugh, Mayor, Alexandrina Council and Dr Simone De Santi, Italian Consul to South Australia at the formal handover of Goolwa's application for accrediation and membership of Cittaslow on 4 September 2006. The
Cittaslow philosophy is a "managed system of continuous
improvement". SABA sponsored the community meeting to discuss whether Goolwa should become a CITTASLOW (or slow town) on 3 August 2005. The Alexandrina Council endorsed the community decisions on 5 September 2005. A community working party assessed Goolwa against the list of criteria or goals. The Goolwa Cittaslow Working Party established an impressive list of new developments and plans during the assessment phase. Members were involved in the 2006 Cittaslow Expo as part of Goolwa Alive, the annual Goolwa Christmas Parades (see below) and the Tour Down Under activities since 2006. Special project groups are meeting regularly and every few months a public meeting is open to everyone in the community. ![]() At the Public meeting of the Goolwa Cittaslow Working Party on 1 August 2007 Cittaslow Goolwa decided to incorporate.
